Ashoka’s Identity: For a long time, Emperor Ashoka’s history was based on Buddhist texts, with no concrete proof.
In the 14th century, a pillar believed to be ‘Bhim’s staff’ was brought to Delhi during Feroz Shah Tughlaq’s reign. In the 20th century, this was identified as an Ashoka pillar.
James Prinsep’s Discovery: In the 19th century, James Prinsep deciphered ancient Brahmi script, finding the names ‘Devanampriya’ and ‘Piyadassi’ on numerous pillars and rock edicts.
Sri Lankan Connection: A Sri Lankan Buddhist text, ‘Dipavamsa,’ helped Prinsep link ‘Piyadassi’ to Ashoka of the Maurya dynasty, but it was still just a theory.
Maski Inscription: In 1915, an engineer named C. Beadon, while exploring the Hatti Gold Mines in Karnataka, found a rock edict.
The Final Link: This edict was the first to explicitly use the phrase ‘Devanampiyas Asokas’ (Devanampriya Ashoka), finally confirming that the names ‘Devanampriya’ and ‘Piyadassi’ belonged to Emperor Ashoka.
