Sri Mariamman temple is the oldest hindu temple in Singapore which was built in 1829. When Tamilans arrived in Singapore in great numbers in 1820s, they actually lived in this area, so they built their Hindu temple, and take note it is a Hindu Goddess temple, showing that how much Tamlians worshipped Mariamman. Later in the 1850s, the British brought in more chinese workers, cause they can sell opium to them, so they made the Tamilans shift to "Tekka" in 1860, which was orginally inhabited by the chinese, since Tekka means " bamboo" in their dialect, since that area had plenty of bamoo shoots. Then that area was called Chinatown in the 1860s and Tekka was known as little India. So the temples such as Sri Perumal Temple and Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple were only built in Little India area after 1860s. To prevent losing touch with Sri Mariamman temple, our tamilans organized the Thimathi festival at the Chinatown area in the 1850s, so that is almost 170 years of history of thimathi right there.
