"I focus growth in my RRSP. Mainly because U.S is where the growth is at so I go big into GOOG, ASML, UNH (after the crash) etc so my total returns don't get chipped away at by withholding tax. My TFSA is more dividend focused because it's more Canadian focused (not much growth up this way). Buying stressed Canadian monopolies can get you a good yield and allow you to lock in DRIPs more easily. TD bank, for example when it tanked following the money laundering scandal last year let me lock in a 5% dividend yield on a systemically important bank and I've already seen 35% capital appreciation. If your timeline is 25 years or more the yield on cost will be substantial.
I hold a good chunk of VFV in my TFSA as well just because I know it's more likely to beat me long-term, but as it stands I'm beating it."
