That Columbus story sounds like bullshit to me. The Taino Indians were descended from tribes in South America, who were famous astronomers. I find it hard to believe that they had never seen or even heard of an eclipse. I find it easier to believe that the story was made up to demonstrate how “backwards” the natives were and how clever Columbus was. Perhaps it was an attempt to rehabilitate Columbus’ reputation. He was known to be a terrible man even in his lifetime. His present fame is a result of Italian immigrants in the early 20th century, angry at the apparent success of Black civil rights movements.
