Re the viking grave, I don't think this can be used to argue that it was normal for women to fight alongside men, and I'm inclined to agree with the academic sceptics that it was either a mistake or, more likely, a purely ceremonial and symbolic display, like perhaps this woman was particularly interested in viking battles and her family buried her like that for sentimental reasons or had, in her own communtity, a fearsome, more masculine persona. The Byzantine account is definitely much harder to explain though, and to me is more compelling evidence. However, if it really was a common, standard occurance for women to fight alongside men, as the historically laughable Vikings show suggests, there certainly would be far more undisputable evidence of this than there is, and not just two specific very questionable examples.
