Even though it was a horrific massacre, the atomic bombs are wildly exaggerated.
The normal usual bombings killed hundreds of times more Japanese than the 2 atomic bombs ever did, because of Al the collateral damage they made (Aka fires)
The real importance of atomic weaponry was it potential back then to reach what it is today

The security forces were used to escorts of planes and bombers waiting around until they amassed large numbers and pushed into enemy territory. A single slightly larger than normal bomber couldn't hold enough bombs to threaten a single borough, let alone a whole city. Nuclear weapons were never even thought of yet.
