  1. The reverberant tone on the drums was created by placing John Bonham's drum kit in the stairwell of Headley Grange (an historical building in England) and recording with just two Beyerdynamic M160 microphones placed at the top of the stairs. The natural room ambience was amplified through heavy compression, and the track was later slowed down on a tape machine to add a "swampy" quality. The microphones pick up all the sound reflections in the stairwell, and add an effect where the cymbals swell before the crash and then slowly decay. This song is arguably the best example of an English rock band expressing the profound influence that the Blues of the American South had on them. Many variations of the blues run throughout Led Zeppelin's catalog, as it does with rock in general, but Zep were truly masters of making it their own. The song Since I've Been Loving You is another great example.

  2. CAROL: “I know they constantly change…” The ideology of “this is my favorite Led Zeppelin song” needs to be abandoned. Take a moment. Breathe. Then proceed with “This is the best BAND (not “song”) I have listened to in my life so far” and you will be safe for decades, potentially centuries, to come.
