I think this conversation was important to listen to because people who care about humanity need to be aware how the small number of people who own the most wealth think about the world. I just finished listening to “Nuclear War” by Annie Jacobsen (a fantastic book and author) and I think this was more terrifying. Ms. Wood seems to be entirely disassociated with the reality of working and financial life that the large part of the population who work at low income, paycheck to paycheck, service, labor and similar jobs experience. If AI and robotics does displace the employment of these people who don’t now and won’t in the future have the resources to become investors or vibe coders, etc- our entire society will need an answer the question of how people will earn a living when AI and robotics are doing all our jobs- and even more important what will give people a reason to exist. I worked in IT for 25 years, then spent almost a decade as a caregiver for my father and now I am a hand weaver. I am a much happier person now. I have also read a lot about textile history and find it fascinating the Industrial Revolution destroyed the once critical profession of hand weaving and AI is about to do the same for my prior profession programming/network management/technology management which only 5 years ago was considered a future proof profession. The way Ms Wood talks about society and the actual humans who are society remind me of directives given out by Orwell’s Big Brother. I hope our world can find a way to care more about human beings and the acquisition of wealth. I feel like I need to relisten to your recent conversation with Brené Brown to clear this horror out of my mind.
