  1. My family still eats cranberry-orange Jello salad, green cottage cheese Jello salad, stuffed celery and olive relish tray, giblet gravy, sweet potato souffle, corn pudding, and especially mince pie, at Thanksgiving. What does this holiday represent, if not tradition?!

  2. If my Tennessee southern born (1928) and bred mama ate oysters only if it was in oyster stew! Cranberry sauce was slice after sliding out the can! I'm 57 and my afore mentioned mama taught me giblet gravy and I've made it since I was 12yo. Sweet potatoes was something that was served once or twice a week not at holidays! Not ambrosia but pink salad, using cool whip, cherry pie filling, pineapple and nuts. Not corn pudding but cornbread to add to the pinto beans! Mincemeat pie absolutely not! Yet celery with cheez whiz and deviled eggs, my job from 6 to 11. Lol, tomato aspic, nope, but I saw it in mamas old cookbook. No brown bread unless we forgot to take the cornbread or heat and serve rolls under the broiler to long. No pumpkin pie, only pink salad, cakes, chocolate pie and chess pie. Turnip anything was an every other day meal, mashed potatoes round here. Turnip greens was left for good luck at New Years. Jello not in our house, we only ate cottage cheese when in the hospital plopped on a pear halve. No ham was covered with yellow mustard and brown sugar. No carrots just corn, green beans, mac & cheese, mashed potatoes and with a huge brother hunted wild turkey slathered with leftover bacon grease and salt then baked low and slow seasoned just right. Then the broth would be used to make dressing (old bread saved all year along with onions, poultry seasoning, celery and stale cornbread, left out overnight to get crusty), yummm. Potato salad, cole slaw, mac salad. And my mamas mock oyster stew was served once a week…it was asparagus with milk, butter, black pepper and saltines, sooo good!
    My menu this year (thanks to mama) is
    Turkey, Ham, Dressing, giblet gravy, mashed taters, mac &cheese, rolls, cranberry sauce, potato salad, coleslaw, corn,, green beans, pintos and cornbread, deviled eggs, cake, chocolate pie, chess pie and boiled custard spiked with a lil bourbon. The oyster dressing was a staple in every southern household when I was young not so anymore but the cranberry salad is delicious & now is a fav in my family my daughter makes it now no more giblet dressing. I always thought it was revolting before I even knew what was in it. Now we use white turkey r chicken
