The First World War was Europe’s most destructive single event since the Black Death, so uh… why on earth did they do it on purpose? Let’s unpack the state of affairs at the turn of the 1900s to understand the World Before the War and see how it could only lead to conflict.

Special thanks to Jonny and Billy from our Discord community, who kindly looked over my script.

  1. Honestly, far more than Hubris, I'd say Fear was the main motivator in triggering WW1. British fear of the German naval program, and what it could mean for the home islands. German fear of Russia's industrialization, and the belief that each year made them stronger, potentially irreversibly so. French fear of letting Germany become too powerful while losing any possible ally in Europe forever. Austro-Hungary fear of the nationalist push from the Balkans. Russian fears of German plans for expansion in the east. Each of these powers, who are arguably at the height of their power, believe that if nothing is done, the balance of powers is about to turn to their disadvantage, and that while a war is far from ideal, better a war now than in a few years.

  2. I like how you're in no way opposed to the same western narrative you make fun of when It comes to the balkans, as if theyre not entitled to states of their own, or they should leave their still Ottoman occupied populations and cities under them, because you know how that turned out, but yeah sure, those damn brutish nationalistic upstart balkans.
