“The Brunswick Manifesto: France Tearing Apart”
By the summer of 1792, France was tearing apart. The war with Austria was a disaster and fear reigned. In the Assembly, tempers flared; in the streets, they exploded. Into this chaos stepped the sans-culottes: the laborers and artisans who had long supported the Revolution. Now, they demanded more. Robespierre had become their voice, delivering fiery speeches at the Jacobins Club condemning the Assembly’s failures, the generals’ betrayals, and the king’s duplicity. He called for the creation of a government elected by the people, accountable to no monarch. Then came the Brunswick Manifesto. The Duke of Brunswick, commanding the Prussian army, threatened to level Paris if King Louis XVI or his family were harmed. Intended to protect the monarchy, it had the opposite effect.
