According to official data cited in two relevant works (‘Women and Yugoslav Partisans: A History of World War II Resistance’ & ‘Mitovi epohe socijalizma’), nearly two million women joined the Yugoslav partisans, and 91 of them received the Order of the People’s Hero, the most prestigious military decoration given in partisan Yugoslavia from its founding in 1943 until the end of the war in Europe in May 1945.

Among these women, one stands out in particular: Lepa Radić, a 17-year-old girl whose story left a lasting legacy in the region. Captured and publicly executed during a mission in western Bosnia, her life uniquely embodies the spirit of resistance shown by the communist partisans during the so-called War of National Liberation.
