This song was originally about her guitarist i believe. He was in an abusive relationship with a woman and aimee could hear them fighting through the wall..voices carry.
She was told to make the song from her point of view as a woman for it to sell.
Theres a story about it where she talks about all of this in an interview on youtube.
I still get chills when she stands up at the end and sings, “He said shut up…”
She spoke up for herself at the end… and he was embarrassed and hated it.
I cry every time I listen to this song.
It took me almost 20 years with my kids dad to finally find my voice. He once told me, “shut up, put your head down and do your job.” (We were also self employed together.)
My current husband and I have been together almost 15 years. He really helped unbrainwash myself and deconstruct.
I always knew good men existed .. I finally found mine.
My kids dad has been with his wife now for a little over 15 years. She’s horrible to him. He really is an abused husband. I know many say what goes around comes around. But I don’t wish that on him. I wish he could find the strength to leave. I know what abuse is like and I don’t wish it even on him.

This song's about a woman in an emotionally abusive relationship, thus the reason why the guy's acting like an a-hole.
Also, I believe that I should point out that Aimee Mann, the lead vocalist/bassist of Til' Tuesday, collaborated with Rush on their song "Time Stand Still" and even appears in the music video for the song
