BORE SCORING: REAL PROBLEM OR OVERHYPED FEAR?
In this video, Brandon from Slakker Racing Development takes you inside one of the most misunderstood topics in the Porsche world — bore scoring on M96 and M97 engines.

We’ll cover:
• What bore scoring actually looks like (and what’s just casting or polish lines)
• The right way to borescope a 996/997 engine — and why “from the bottom” is a myth
• Early vs. late-stage scoring and what symptoms you’ll notice
• Why the camera always makes things look worse than they are
• Side-by-side comparisons: borescope footage vs. real cylinder surfaces after teardown

Whether you’re inspecting a car to buy, trying to understand a shop’s report, or just curious about the engineering behind these flat-sixes, this video breaks it all down — with real examples, no scare tactics.

  1. Interesting video… What would cause debris in the engine? Driving hard from cold? High revving it constantly? Not enough oil change? Cylinder wall degradation? If the cylinders haven't been coated with resistant material, then they could in theory degrade over time and cause bore scoring🥴.

  2. I always thought it was weird people say to scope it from the bottom. It made NO sense to me. There's never been a single case where a bore-scoring was hidden because it was inspected from top-down. Imo, just drive the car until it starts burning oil then get a rebuild.
