  1. I was about to start learning Revit, but after your talk, I realized I'd be way behind the curve with this outdated program. On the other hand, I see the logic in letting SketchUp handle routine tasks with AI. Hope they catch this wave and don't miss out. Can't wait for their new release!

  2. I understand you have to start small, but if the goal from the outset isn't something more comprehensive that integrates all disciplines, its going to end up where Revit and Autocad did – They're going to end up creating something taylor made for one area and when they inevitably start evolving, the whole thing will start getting lopsided or reach a point where they cant build out anymore. Its good to see some people trying to develop something better though. Revit is my bread and butter but in recent years I've become a sales person for them, trying to convince stakeholders to invest in their tech when all Autodesk do is launch half-baked off-shoot products, that should have been part of their AEC suite, and then charging you more for those. Something's gotta give

  3. I feel like the thing missing from your narrative is the role of VC funding. "BIM 2.0" is just a away to leverage VC funding to develop the next neat front-end tool for either esri, autodesk or Bentley to buy you up.

They aren't really doing anything that isn't already possible in other software – problem is, if you can't go straight from high level concepts into drawings, the tools are nothing more than a children's sandbox. Fun to dabble with but not a place where you can get real work done.

Which is where I circle back to the VC part. Call me cynical but these are just fancy ways to try to make a quick buck. Everyone wants to be the next Spacemaker (the company autodesk bought and turned into forma). Things like Arcol strike me more as technology demonstrations than actual, real tools.

  4. I’m not an architect, just a homeowner with some CAD experience (fusion360). Can anyone recommend what tool would be good for me to model my existing home in. It’s an 115yr old home with lots of weird features and modifications. I want to model it to record framing, plumbing, electrical lines etc as well as do internal and external renders as we embark on remodeling it.
