BC/AD and BCE/CE represent exactly the same years – the timeline is identical, only the terminology differs. BC means “Before Christ” and AD means “Anno Domini,” while BCE means “Before Common Era” and CE means “Common Era.” Both share the same numbering system, the same “no year zero” rule, and the same dividing point (the traditionally estimated birth year of Jesus). So when you see 500 AD or 500 CE, they refer to the exact same year.

Saying BC/AD is the old system and BCE/CE is the new system isn’t fully correct – it’s not a new calendar, just a newer way of labeling it. BC/AD is the traditional Christian notation, and BCE/CE is the modern, neutral version used in academic and scientific contexts to make the system inclusive for all cultures and beliefs.
