I became very curious about all the chatter surrounding #thegirlfriend starring #rashmikamandanna directed by Rahul Ravindran. This #telugu movie aims to also shed light on more informed cinema, contrary to celebrated films like Arjun Reddy, Kabir Singh and the wave of Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat and Tere Ishk Mein. 1. People say most movies are male centric and rare gems like these are women centeric. It's a false notion when you see movies by genre.
Most movies are male centeric when it comes to action, scifi, horror or even family drama where a middle class struggles etc are shown.
And male centric movies reflecting real world perspective generally show the struggles and sacrifices of men. That's called the hero's journey in cinema.
There is no male centric movie when it comes to relationship or romance.
On the other hand, women centric movies don't generally shift between different genres. They only target two sets of audiences. 1) The female fantasy of romcom. 2) The bad guy and good girl template.
English movies take a lot of genuine women centric movies like Mother, Devil wears Prada, Fury Road, Annhilation, Erin Brockovich, Hidden figures etc etc. These are performance based movies where female characters genuinely have an identity of their own and establish their own arc.

Indian movies must turn the table and stop audience for granted. You cannot take a movie based on toxic girlfriend or a wife. Coz it wont suit the narrative. Likewise, you cannot take a truly female centeric movie except for occasional sports films or biographies. You just don't want to squeeze your brains.

Confine females only to relationships and there is nothing more to them as per Indian directors.
Women can only be victims or cheerleaders. They cannot be villains or heros.
It's funny to see people argue and fight over this crap.
In the West, they mockingly say if you want a movie to be celebrated based on theme rather than content, take movies bases on women, LGBT, racism.
In India, we can take about women, LGBT and casteism and the same works very well.

  2. I am absolutely blown away by your description of toxic masculinity when you mention echo chambers ! Haven’t yet seen the movie but i am intrigued . I definitely was taken aback by some great movies in Telugu like dear comrade .. which was so forward thinking !
