  1. The reason that they thought they were eating flesh and drinking blood is because the Christian’s told them they were. The world was a mystical one in the early centuries of christianity.

    It wasn’t symbolic it the bread and wine actually became the literal blood and flesh of Jesus. When it passed your lips it changed with your faith.

    The people around them lived in a mystical world where the made little sacrifices everyday and consulted oracles.

    So in their minds they were seeing people that drank blood and ate flesh.

    It is called Transubstantiation. It is still part of Catholic belief even if most Catholics do not know it…
