We often feel uncomfortable when we discover why someone might be a conspiracy theorist. But what explains this discomfort? After all, if conspiracy theories are just theories about conspiracies, this discomfort is unwarranted: some conspiracies do happen, and theories about them make good sense. In this short explainer, we learn what might make a conspiracy theory a reliable indicator of systematic irrationality.

This is the first in a series of mini-explainers about different topics in applied epistemology.
