In April 1955, Albert Einstein passed away at Princeton Hospital. During his autopsy, pathologist Dr. Thomas Stoltz Harvey removed Einstein’s brain without the family’s prior consent, aiming to study the source of his genius. Harvey preserved the brain in formalin and later sectioned it into 240 blocks, creating microscope slides for research.
Over the next four decades, Harvey kept the brain specimens, storing them in various locations, including his basement. He distributed some samples to researchers, leading to studies that noted unique features in Einstein’s brain, such as a higher ratio of glial cells in certain regions.
In 2010, Harvey’s estate transferred the remaining brain specimens to the National Museum of Health and Medicine.
