In this video we look at a long-standing theory that claims that Ashkenazi Jews are descendants of the Khazars. If it were true, that would make Ashkenazim offshoots of a multi-ethnic conglomerate of Turkic people who converted en masse in the eighth century in the kingdom of Khazaria.

Turns out, it’s totally false.

Unlike other conspiracy theories, though, it’s not just a fringe few who are pushing this idea. It has the backing of academics, including some in Israel – with dangerous implications.

The hypothesis has been disproved, so why does it continue to resonate and how did an attempt to use the theory to fight back against antisemitism in the 1970s end up fueling anti-Israel rhetoric to this day?

Let us know what you think of the video in the comments below.

  1. I’m a Berber Moroccan, and I firmly believe that Jewish people—whether Ashkenazi, Sephardi, or Mizrahi—share a common ancestry. I’ve met many Jews from Morocco and throughout Europe, and it’s striking how many share similar facial features with Christians from Lebanon, Samaritans, or Druze. Some even resemble figures like Ariel Sharon or Mordechai Kedar, regardless of where they come from. Whether Sephardi, Ashkenazi, or even Berber Jews, they often don’t fit the typical image of non-Jewish natives.

  2. Many Westerners who are not Jewish struggle to understand why the term 'anti-Semitic' is used exclusively for Jews and not for individuals of other religions who are also from the Levant or have ancestral ties to the region.
