In this video we look at a long-standing theory that claims that Ashkenazi Jews are descendants of the Khazars. If it were true, that would make Ashkenazim offshoots of a multi-ethnic conglomerate of Turkic people who converted en masse in the eighth century in the kingdom of Khazaria.
Turns out, it’s totally false.
Unlike other conspiracy theories, though, it’s not just a fringe few who are pushing this idea. It has the backing of academics, including some in Israel – with dangerous implications.
The hypothesis has been disproved, so why does it continue to resonate and how did an attempt to use the theory to fight back against antisemitism in the 1970s end up fueling anti-Israel rhetoric to this day?
Let us know what you think of the video in the comments below.

So many African Americans in this comment section are trying so desperately to hold onto their convictions of knowing the truth while everyone else is apparently dumb. You’re missing the point and don’t understand the importance of what’s really going on. You’re referencing 1 book instead of using collective knowledge to come to a universal understanding.
@unpacked I feel like if we have to defend every false claim lobbied against the Jews, we're just giving credibility to those claims. INSTEAD let's just tell the true story upfront: After the First Jewish-Roman War and the fall of the Second Temple in 70 CE, many Jewish captives were enslaved and brought to Rome. From there, some were eventually transported to other parts of the Roman Empire, including the Rhineland, which is part of modern Germany. The Jewish communities that eventually formed in the Rhineland, known as the Ashkenazi Jews, are descendants of these and subsequent Jewish immigrants and deportees to the region.
