Christoph Waltz wasn't really known outside of Germany/Austria, he actually thought about quitting/retirement. I'm German and knew him before but i didn't know how good he was as an Actor. Those two Tarantino movies allowed him to show his Talent. Many people are insanely Talented but never get a chance to shine
