Love how a lot of this movie is portrayed as this “hopeless, against all odds” mission when in reality during this time period, the Germans were in such disarray that the Americans and allies were pretty much strolling through Germany and its defenders.
Shia’s realisation that his leader was going to stay anyway despite the odds of surviving being next to zilch, meant a certain suicide for them all. His eyes spoke volumes of different emotions : of his fear for his life and that of his tank mates from this imminent suicide – he was after all human – but they also held a steely gaze of denial and eventual steadfast support for his leader despite knowing he was just about to give up his life. He probably felt a little “betrayed” with his sergeant’s seeming disregard for their lives, till the latter encouraged them to save themselves. And that’s the toughest thing a tired soldier can do on the battlefield : to decide to fight anyway knowing it was going to end in his own grave.
The team spirit and camaraderie here is testament to how military team members bond so very deeply, entwined in one another’s well-being and safety – “one for all, all for one” – even if it meant death.
This scene from the masterpiece that “Fury” truly is, is as poignant and emotionally disturbing, yet it embodies fighting spirit, deep friendship, mutual support, bravery towards the cause over self, the ultimate sacrifice and masculinity in the spades to hold one’s ground despite insurmountable odds from the advent of an impending suicide mission.
Thank you the entire cast and crew and the Director David Ayer for bringing this jewel to life.
Most people don’t know that Top wanted to die… he only came to the war out of extreme guilt for a DUI that killed his family… that level of pain that can’t allow you to bare it anymore.
