You're both correct. The melody has a melancholy tone and the lyrics absolutely define his devotion to the woman he is singing about.
I grew up listening to Bread. I love so many of their songs but along the same "feelings" of "IF" I would recommend that you listen to Everything I Own. It's beautiful and it's partly sad. You'll love it, I promise!
My wife and i were married in 1973 and this was our first dance song. Aug. 3, 2025 will make 52 years we've been married. It was also played at our 50th anniversary party.
