The history of our country is full of the sacrifices and efforts of men like the Mass 54th, like the men and women who pushed West on the Oregon Trail, like the immigrants who, like the song says, "started with nothing and worked hard all of their lives". Are we going to allow a covey of traitors like TACO and his cronies to steal it from under us?
The general in this scene (Brigadier General George Crockett Strong) was only 30 years old when he was KIA during the subsequent assaults on Fort Wagner following the events of this movie.

In real life, the axis of attack had the ocean on the advancing unit's right (not on the left as depicted in the movie). Good movie though.

General George Strong was only 30 years old at the time of the attack on Fort Wagner. Unfortunately, he was also killed in this battle. But at 30, he was already a general. Imagine what he would have become if he had survived.
