8. "Our best hope" – hope is not a plan Sir. Truth be told, toward the end of the Civil War, the Union brought out a new artillery piece that had a rifled barrel. This type of arty immediately rendered all masonry forts (like the ones near Charleston) obsolete. But, men were cheap back then.

   Look up the history of Fort Pulaski that is in Georgia. One rifled artillery piece caused the fort to surrender.
