The Delhi Sultanate was ruled by 5 dynasties over 326 years. Let’s understand the story of 300 years in just a minute.
In 1192, Mohammad Ghori defeated Prithviraj Chauhan. Ghori’s slave, Qutub Uddin Aibak, laid the foundation of the Slave Dynasty in Delhi and made it the capital. He also constructed the Qutub Minar.
Then Jalal-ud-din Firoz Khilji came, who started the Khilji dynasty and expanded his control to North India. During this period, Amir Khusro came. The Khiljis gave positions to Turks and Afghans.
As a result, Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq, who was Turkish himself, ousted the Khiljis and established the Tughlaq dynasty. It ruled for the longest period of 93 years. They changed the capital from Delhi to Devgiri (Daulatabad) but later reversed the decision and introduced copper coins in place of Silver Tankas.
Then came the Sayyid dynasty, which was peace-loving. It is believed that the Delhi Sultanate began to weaken during the Tughlaq and Sayyid dynasties.
When the Lodi dynasty began in 1451 with Bahlul Lodi, Daulat Khan Lodi made a mistake by inviting Babur to India, who later became his enemy. Babur’s victory in the Battle of Panipat marked the end of the Delhi Sultanate.
