(No I'm not defending the USSR, while it has acomplished many things we don't categorize things by their worst possible aspects.)
With that out of the way, "gulags" (while gulag isn't the only prison like structure, its complicated and usually simplified to just gulag) were indeed work camps for criminals and political enemies with conditions being similar to those in the video at worst, the highest ammount of people at one time was around 1.5 million in the 1940's and gulags were being eroded and dismanteled after Stalin died. Those estimates are on the high end from what it seems like. But the us has basically the same thing, as conditions very similar gulags are allowed in the US via the 13th amendment but instead of the inmates being forced to do work that benefits the rest of society (gulags) they are forced to produce goods for private companies.
