I think there are a lot of factors at play. I think that a lot of older people are feeling lonelier and more “left behind” as society advances forward at an ever-increasing rate. I think the generally, it’s harder to connect with people irl in todays world, and I think that once you start getting older, your younger years when things were simpler and easier seem a lot more idyllic.
i guess midigating sadness at all levels would mean to provide people with what they need. not only meterialistically but also mentally. purpose, for example. this cannot be achieved in capitalism.
Also, in the US, a lot of people have to work until their death or until they literally can't anymore, and then are too old to enjoy any sort of retirement.

The old graph applies to you now when you are in your 30's-40's and the new graph will apply to you when you get older.
