I was wondering why did Erik go through that stuff at the store if he wasn't on Death's list. But I have a theory. Perhaps Death realized that with Stefani thinking Erik is next, Death caused that accident to happen and have all the other stuff around them in this scene to distract her that way, Death would be able to strike Julia at the perfect moment.
