The last 5 years of my mothers life, she was paralyzed from the waist down, and I quit work to care for her….40 pills a day, fentanyl patch, made her every meal, carried her to her drs appts. It made me cold/hard…..I would do it all over again, but it changed me as a person.

My dads getting old. Hes almost 70. Police officer in texas for 40 years. Hes mean, he's only told me he loved me 3 times maybe ever. I got my moms personality and they've been divorced and for good reasons. They have clashing personalities. So he just naturally resents me and my brother and him are like twins. They get along famously. I always hated him for that until I got sober. 3 months sober off opiates. Bad stuff. Almost killed me getting off them. Spent a week in the hospital and my kidneys and liver were shutting down. I made it through though. I realize now my dad doesnt resent me or hate me. He just doesn't know how to express his emotions with anyone whos not on his level. My I.Q is 138. Im so much smarter than him but hes smarter than me in different ways. He can build anything. He built his entire house. I realize now he's not cruel. He's just very very strong and life has given him a tough beat. He's been shot on the job twice. My pawpaw who I'm named after was korean war and Vietnam vet. He was a real great man. The nicest most giving man I have ever known. Before he died of cancer he gave me his police officer flashlight. Oh after the wars he was chief of police in orange texas. Where we all live. Anyways, that flashlight is my most prized possession and I no longer harbor any ill will towards my father. Me and him are just on two different levels of understanding and that is just fine. I love you Andrew nolen verrett r.i.p
