You need also need to dig in to Apollo 13 (a 95% true story), or Sully (also mostly true as far as the events, not the aftermath), or Catch me if You Can (also a mostly true story, and fascinating), Or Captain Phillips, (also mostly true). Or A League of Their Own (Based on a true story, but only the situation).
Cast Away is good, but it can grab different people differently. The Few things I've see you react to so far, don't think you'll care for it in the end. You'll love it while watching it though.
But us older folk remember him starting out as a comedian. Try Splash. Or Big (you'll still cry, but it's not the same).
Or his transitional period where he did rom-coms like Sleepless in Seattle, or You've Got Mail.
