  1. The story is absolutely made for kids. The lore is extremely easy to understand, the storytelling is very shallow, the characters are all super safe and cliché, and they never take real risks with it. It never really surpasses a 6/10.

  2. I don't think it is as simple as "bright colours and anime style = for kids". This is the same argument that made people choke on anime like madoka magica.

I left this same comment under Glaives og video. Anime ≠ for kids. It is an extremely popular style and medium. Anyone from a younger age to older adults can technically enjoy an anime that hits the tropes that they enjoy. The thing is, yes, having death and slavery and other mature topics in the game doesnt automatically mean the game is super mature now. It is still mostly silly at the end of it all. I personally do not think that we can equate the style they chose for the game = for kids.

If your argument was based on Paimon repeating everything and the teens n kids (representation) in the game THEN that would be more reasonable. But not 100%. But the style itself doesnt mean that it is automatically for children. At the end of the day, I can only day that this approach gave them the widest audience possible. From teens to adults. I dont think that, at least by the way you act, 90% of the fanbase was 10yo at launch and is now like 15.

Could say the same thing about WuWa. It has cute characters like Peeb? Must be for children. Anime style but darker? God forbid, that's also for children! Realism only!

Anyways so according to an event held under the guidance of the shanghai administration of culture and tourism, the actual numbers seem to be very different. 70% of players are young people ages 18-30. Over 300Mil players and a 6 males to 4 females ratio. The average age, according to some sources, is 25. Some state 35 but that doesnt align with the other numbers from the 2025 study.

So uh, adding the game genre + content of the game + the themes + these stats up, I would say that Genshin is not a game designed for kids with a massive child audience.

Yes, there will still be kids playing these games because they're easy to access. I've seen 12yo play both WuWa and Genshin. It is an issue we have in the gachaspace due to games having no paywall to access them. Does Genshins more anime artstyle attract more children? Well that is a given, anime has always attracted children. It is extremely popular because such a huge audience of all ages can find anime that suit their taste. From AoT to Gurren Lagann to Ghibli movies. I think it was a choice to capture a wide audience but I dont think that the target audience was kids. It is a gacha game after all. What are you gonna do with money that would instantly get refunded? They clearly aimed for early 20s.
