Dr. Roy Casagranda examines the extraordinary life and leadership of Toussaint Louverture during the Haitian Revolution — a story of vision, mercy, and betrayal. From the arrival of Columbus and the genocide of the Taino to the rise of Louverture and the fall of Napoleon’s colonial ambitions, this lecture reveals how Haiti became the first free Black republic in the modern world. Exploring themes of power, forgiveness, race, and empire, Dr. Casagranda exposes the moral and political lessons that still define the struggle for justice and freedom today.

59:05 perhaps he was retaining Islamic roots? The first Surah of the Quran – Al Fatihah, translates to ‘The Opening’
5:05 Adam is one of many incantations of the holy spirit. Yeshwah. Kirshna. Muhammed. Noah. Moses. Joshua. Then there is the Father, Ohm, Amen, God. And the Son, Jesus, man, humanity. Let us not mock that which we do not understand.

UAE is funding a genocide in Sudan, their leadership is not admirable.
This is amazing
Even as he "denounces" slavery and enslavers his fascination and respect for it shines right through.
There's this lingering soulless-ness, how these people talk about these atrocities as simple historical facts
The "blacks" the "browns" the "whites" the "slaves"
"Aw listen to their screams – anyway"
Imagine your ancestors committing these heinous crimes and then later being able to gain recognition for recounting the occurrences somewhat lackadaisically
You can be logical and exact without romanticization, satirization, and lack of genuine compassion during these talks.
The Germans, Poles and a few others were also spared. They mostly targeted the French.
Academic Note: Mule' isn't any less socially offensive than Mulatto- in particular, when used by cultural outsiders. "Mulatto" comes from the term "Mule," that is the offspring of a donkey and a horse. It was to say there were two different species/races (sic) of human who'd had a child.
Mule is a loan word from Asia Minor that comes to us from the Proto-Italic and Greek (mushk and myklos, respectively).
That said, "mule" has been used allusively to refer to hybridizations and the mixed nature of things for a long time – possibly since the word's introduction to the west. Still, meanings change with time.
As the current is, acceptable terms might include biracial, multiracial, mixed-race, mixed (like Mestizo), but all are references to race – which is largely a socio/cultural concept.
Colonialism affected every people and country on the planet.
Why did Tousiant need whites for international business connections when he made his money to free his own family with the help of United States business partners.
it stings to hear dr. casagranda blame poor economic development on white flight, rather than more important factors like the crushing post-independence indemnity, for example, which wasn’t even mentioned at all. not to mention the problematic praise for the UAE as well. love you roy, but we must do better!!
