Dr. Roy Casagranda examines the extraordinary life and leadership of Toussaint Louverture during the Haitian Revolution — a story of vision, mercy, and betrayal. From the arrival of Columbus and the genocide of the Taino to the rise of Louverture and the fall of Napoleon’s colonial ambitions, this lecture reveals how Haiti became the first free Black republic in the modern world. Exploring themes of power, forgiveness, race, and empire, Dr. Casagranda exposes the moral and political lessons that still define the struggle for justice and freedom today.

  1. Dr. Roy, I understand that you live in the UAE and that’s okay, whoever as a political scientist that seems to be on the left and seems to condemn colonialism/apartheid, isn’t it kind of weird to be praising the leadership of the UAE when they are actively funding a genocide in Sudan? I know you may not be able to outright condemn them but this open praise for a government that is willing to fund a muderous genocidal group like the RSF and then on top of that profit from the Gold that is stolen from the Sudanese people and used to profit the UAE while millions of Sudanese citizens are displaced and hundreds of thousands of Sudanese people are killed to facilitate this illicit trade, I’m not sure if praising the “leadership” is a positive thing, idk but this is a bit off putting.

  2. Great lecturer, i just wonder how long it will take before UAE sucks all of his light out with position and benefits. Anyway, if you run out of ideas i hope you can do a talk on the aksumite/abyssinian empire, especially including how they (christians) let Muhammad (pbuh) in and protected him after he got driven out of mekkah
