  1. The author in question like got the story from the Torah. When Moses came down from Mount Sainai and saw the Jewish people worshiping a golden calf in his long absence (likely because they had taken to worshiping the Egyptian goddess Hathor), he had the idol melted down and had everyone drink the molten gold as penance. When the story was rewritten by more self-serving Christian church officials and compiled into the modern-day Bible, it was changed to say the Earth swallowed everyone up right then and there to paint God as a more vengeful deity that the people needed protection from, which the church officials could provide (for a fee).
