Hittites and Troy are the best examples, but most of the history of Mesopotamia, earliest seat of civilization, was lost and unattested by material evidence until the 19th century. Only Biblical references. A few classical ones. Even Babylon, a latecomer of that civilization for all that it was considered unspeakably ancient by classical times, was a lost mudpile.
You think he was the worst archeologist? Actually, he was pretty typical for his time. Indiana Jones isn't an inaccurate depiction for his time, either, and they all make modern archeologists cringe.

The gorilla one reminds me of a man from Kenya I met once. When he went to school back when Kenya was still part of the British Empire, he had to learn the year that Mt. Killimanjaro was "discovered." But… the local people knew it was there for centuries. I mean, its right there, kinda hard to miss. But the British had a date that the mountain was "discovered" and I guess no one knew it was there before then…. 🤔
