The history of Sweden in the 12th-14th centuries is an era of bloody dynastic wars, tribal rivalries, crusades, and the formation of Swedish national identity. In this video, you will learn how the Swedish lands transformed from the divided territories of the Svear and Geats into a centralized monarchy that laid the foundation for modern Sweden.
Who were the Sverkers and the Erics? Why did Swedish kings earn nicknames like “the Empty-Headed” or “the Lisping”? How did the struggle between brothers give birth to the Riksdag? And why did the Folkungs become a symbol of Swedish statehood? We trace the paths of kings Inge, Eric the Saint, Sverker, Birger Jarl, and Magnus Ladulås – from their rises to their downfalls, through rebellions, alliances, betrayals, and reforms.
You will discover the first Swedish crusades to Finland, attempts to recapture fortresses from the Novgorodians, the struggle for Scania, and the founding of Stockholm. This video offers a detailed overview of medieval Sweden – a vivid story of power, faith, and ambition that shaped one of Europe’s enduring kingdoms

lucky we finns did get rid of these arrocant swedes in 1809
Total misunderstanding about Finland and the Swedish interests there. There was never a pre-Sweden ”Finland” streching out to the coast and archipelago like indicated at 14:47, and the Finns were an inland population of different tribes, not a nation. The populations in the archipelahos and along most of the coasts along most of the Baltic sea were already related to and spoke the same language as the Svear, which still to historic times and even to this day largely remains true.
In fact, the early Svear was centered on the Roden trade and migration routes, and largely a sea faring centric society, meaning that water ways connected people, even throughout the Russian rivers, and land kept them apart.
Hence the crusades to ”Finland” was nothing like a conquest, it was a religous tribute to the Pope, and very little violence. ”Finland” was already since the stone and bronse ages part of the same Roden realm, even though the nation of Sweden did not yet exist.
What the hell is Karllsepitt?
Sounds a bit obscene.
It kind of looks like it's where Jönköping is today.
As a Finn, I find Sweden to be the coolest country in the history of Europe. If only there hadn't been so much rivalry with Denmark. A united North would be epic.
Love from the capital of the East Geats, Linköping❤
Real life Game of Thrones.
I’m Swedish Scandinavian, and what is geates. They are Goths. Västgötar is Visigoth’s, Östgötar is Ostrogoth’s. And the blue in the map is wrong.
Sweden and Denmark still hold the dubious record of most wars fought between any two countries. About 30 relatively well documented – after the Middle Ages – and probably many more before that. Thus, beating out England and France – 40 wars, and Russian and Turkey – 14 wars.
Swedes:
Wants to fight amongst themselves. Again.
Danes:
"We can support that"
Day 32 of asking for a video about the Toungoo Empire — the largest empire in Southeast Asian history.
Please consider making a video about Bayinnaung, the greatest conqueror of Southeast Asia. He masterminded the Battle of Naungyo (10,000 vs 80,000) — one of history’s most impressive tactical victories. Unlike most conquerors, Bayinnaung expanded his empire through mercy, diplomacy, and unity, rather than mass killing or cruelty.
Please also cover the Sino-Burmese Wars, when the Konbaung Kingdom of Burma repelled four consecutive invasions by the Qing Empire of China. These wars were incredibly important — the Qing dynasty had already expanded China’s borders massively, annexing regions like Tibet. Burma’s victories prevented Southeast Asia from being absorbed into the Chinese empire, preserving the region’s independence and shaping its future.
I truly believe your channel would benefit from this topic. The Toungoo and Konbaung eras are full of brilliant military strategy, political innovation, and cultural significance that deserve far more attention.
