Aotearoa is not what the Māori called the whole country it was for the north island only. Simple google search would have shown you that.
Only partway through, but seriously I'm used to hearing "being victims of the sea" but the Maori really said, naw.
You're talking a bs crown version of Nz history.. this comes from a book written by George Grey in 1855
Some minor pronunciation issues, but man. Absolutely amazing video. When I say minor, I mean minor. By far the best I've heard from a non-kiwi YouTuber and to be honest, better than plenty of kiwis too.
Factually, damn near perfect. Simplified, sure but its not even a 10 minute video so of course it is. Only thing I would have liked to have seen added, and honestly probably doesn't change anything really, was that for about 200 years we went back and forth with the Polynesian Islands. In particular with the Cook Islands. And that several waka came to NZ as supply boats.
Im here in New Zealand for study abroad right now and this felt like fate lol im taking a history of aotearoa class this semester and this is a nice little recap of a piece of it

Every myth and legend that the Māori claim was made up by missionaries from England – Finding that the Māori had no history other than the relentless murdering of any other tribe they came across, they made up stories to impress the Queen – the one about the shape of the islands resembling a Bout and Fish were beyond them as they had no idea what shape the islands were unlike the Dutch and English who mapped the islands – also no one went fishing and caught the north island – I think science would agree that could never happen – the only benefit they saw in the Europeans coming was Guns with which to kill other tribes faster, not much has changed now its gangs but still the same.
Theres evidence of human setlement here in NewZealand that goes back well over 6000yrs mate, this videos crazy inacurate
You screwed the pooch with your title . Have a look up of the origins of the name Aotearoa . It never was used by anyone to describe the whole of NZ . It is now pushed by born again Maori that don't know their history . Supported by well meaning but misinformed liberals , and pushed by corporates and main stream media to virtue signal.
