  1. Is this what liberals think happened?
    Here's what actually happened:
After WWII Korea was divided between Soviet-backed communists in the North and US-backed capitalists in the South Syngman Rhee became president of South Korea in 1948 but his government quickly showed deep problems Though supported by the US Rhee ruled with an iron fist He suppressed political opposition rigged elections and cracked down violently on leftist and peasant movements This included brutal events like the Jeju Uprising where thousands of civilians were killed by government forces trying to stop rebellion

Many ordinary South Koreans especially poor farmers and labor activists became disillusioned with Rhee’s regime because it protected wealthy landlords and failed to carry out land reforms In contrast North Korea redistributed land and promised equality under communism Because of this some Southerners actually fled north in the late 1940s seeking better living conditions and justice

Meanwhile tensions between North and South grew Both governments claimed to be the true rulers of Korea and border clashes became common In 1950 North Korea with Soviet and Chinese support launched a full invasion believing the South was weak and unpopular This started the Korean War a brutal conflict caused by the failures of Rhee’s authoritarian rule and the bigger Cold War fight between communism and capitalism
