This would've been a hell of an exercise in diplomatic dealings during a war.
I mean think about it.
Imagine if the german ambassador asked the Belgian government if they could pay to help transport troops for a joint training exercise.
Only to then use said troops to essentially seize the country at once.
More so if they did it as an opening act before their formal declaration of war on Russia.
If the timing is good enough the Germans could've caught the French off guard just enough there might've not been a Battle of the Marne.
Imagine the general asking the guy at the counter for tickets and a million soldiers just stand behind him
Belgians : “A million men??? I could maybe give a 10% off … but don’t forget to buy our Belgian fries!!!! have a nice tour in France gentlemen.”
So they did ask!
I mean sure the Belgium stuff was iffy but the battle at the Somme was what really caused big issues since it "stopped" a quick win in the west. And then obviously we should have lobbied more in the US since thats what ultimately lost the war.
Attacking Belgium wasnt a mistake, Britain was joining the Entente either way
Loll
They did make a cataclysmic mistake but it wasn't that it was the Zimmerman telegram Britain had already decided to side with the French before hand it would just have been delayed by a couple months and they were winning Russia had collapsed Italy and lossed immense amounts of men to the Austro Hungarian and the French were suffering massive supply shortages with France and Italy about to collapse Britain would have also left a war they had almost no reason to be in however when they sent the Zimmerman telegram they signed they're own death warrent they had just made it so every central power no longer had to fight on multiple fronts the central powers were wrecking the entente and they were about to collapse however when they pissed off the US they made a country in weakend by war and with a large population and what did they bring a shotgun one of the single best weapons for trench combat and led to the surrender of Bulgaria collapse of Austria Hungary and the ottoman empire and finally the defeat of the German empire
Actually they sounded as reasonable as possible under the circumstances. They offered to pay for everything and to get put as quickly as possibly.
Hitler missed a trick. He should have sent the Waffen SS over the Channel in dinghies to claim asylum. Wait a couple of years until he's got a few divisions spread all over the UK and bang …war over.
