Five years, wow! It was 2019 that visited Italy for the first time.. the only time I left Canada. I fell in love with the small towns and I found your pages not long after..
Julie, thanks for sharing your story. Here's another and different perspective. My wife and I retired and moved to northern Italy where we are now residents as well as Italian citizens. Our little village, like many has a very ancient and proud history with many wonderful local families most which date back generations. Over time properties in our village have been sold to people who don't live here permanently. They're either 2nd homes or or owned by absentee investors and rented on the short term rental market during the holiday season. As a consequence property prices have increased to a level where local younger residents can no longer afford to live here and have been forced to move away. Sadly our village now becomes a ghost town during the off season. As a consequence local community services are in decline and many once prosperous businesses suffer. These past few weeks as our once very safe little village quietens down after a busy season there has been a spate of home burglaries involving professional criminals from the city staking out and breaking in to vacant properties. The impact of purchasing in a small village in a popular area can have long term devastating impacts on local residents. Something I hope everyone will give a moments thought to when planning their purchase of a 2nd home or investment property in Italy.
