How much wire is required at an outlet box? Today I’ll show you in this short video what the NEC requires for wire at an outlet box. How much from inside the box, how much outside the box and how much wire sheath must extend inside the box.
Please note that an outlet as defined by NEC is a point on the wiring system at which current is taken to supply utilization equipment. So not only at a receptacle which is commonly know as an “outlet”.

I always leave 12-14 in from the back of the box. Then i cut it to 6 in, then use the scrap for pigtails.
Yeah, but with idiot Contractors like Drywallers who roto the hell out of the box and cut the cables down to 1 in😂
It's happened to me
I wish I had 4 inches outside the box
Hitch hiker length, 6 inches from bob
Very informative Sir 👏🏽 keep up the good work 👍🏽
As a remodeler I have a question. What do you do if you have old small size box with aluminum wires with pig tales (takes about 90%of space) and you need to install gfi without breaking the wall.
6 inches from the outside edge of the box. You don’t need 6 inches? Good for you.
6 inches outside the edge of the box.
You are the man and I'm going to subscribe
It used to be 6" from the front edge of the box. Now I believe it is 6" from where it enters the box.
I always put way too much .
