Using a brown paper bag is an effective method to speed up the ripening process of an unripe avocado by trapping the natural ethylene gas it produces. For an even faster process, add an apple or a banana to the bag, as these fruits release a higher concentration of ethylene. This is different from the browning that happens after an avocado is cut; the brown paper bag method is for ripening a whole, unripe fruit.
