  1. Super helpful information, thank you! I would LOVE to see a longer video on this! We are remodeling our kitchen soon and want wood for the base cabinets and painted white on the uppers, but also doing wood-look vinyl flooring from the kitchen into the next room, which it opens up to and is kind of a dining/office area. We're having a hard time choosing wood tones for the base cabinets and flooring. Our house is pale yellow on the outside and is cottage style, surounded by woods. Most of the interior of the house is white beadboard paneling, and I love the Scandinavian look, but I have different toned wood pieces throughout, so not sure I could (or want to) pull off that exact look. I probably will do more of a Scandi-cottage eclectic look, if I'm making any sense! 😆 I don't mean the overly cutesy, 'ruffled curtains' cottage, but showing my love of natural materials and things hand made from them.

I have a blonde-wood handmade Amish (simply styled, not ornate) roll top desk and also was given my grandmother's cherry wood china hutch and matching dining table that can be seen from the kitchen. They are not ornately styled either, but definitely not Scandinavian. I cannot figure out what year/style they are… they have simple straight lines, no curves, metal hardware for handles on the hutch, plain glass on the upper part, and a slight, raised straight line decoration that follows the edge of the bottom door panels. ???

I'm leaning toward lighter flooring to make the space look bigger as we have short ceilings and a mid-tone of some sorts for the lower cabinets to contrast with the white countertop. Do I go toward yellow tones, pinkish tones, or stay more neutral??? I worry because I envision "neutral" as a pecan color… eh, boring. I'm so confused and wish I understood the different aspects of designing with wood and the properties of wood… color, tones, etc, etc, etc. Help!!

  2. Hi Nick, Your videos have opened my eyes about would mixing and color tones. Could you do another video about paint? I’ve reviewed your painting videos and don’t find anything about ceiling paint. If I am using a neutral on the walls can I use the same paint on the ceiling? Should matt paint be used on both the ceiling and walls in a living room or is eggshell better? I have no kids in the house but am prepping the house for resale.

  3. I am amazed that people freak about just getting different colors and putting them next to each other and if they are jarring to you don't do it. And if they are pleasing you do it. Almost all of us have somebody's grandmothers something somewhere. But people are afraid to try color. And I don't know why. The sky is blue grass is green. But all of those are in varying shades. So your advice is good. I just get concerned when people come to you and expect a full length video on how to pick something that common sense would say expand your mind bring in swatches. Take pictures and make your own decisions. But what the heck. It's early. I haven't finished my 1st cup of coffee. And I'm already shaking my head. OK now let's check in see what's going on in the real world …figure out how we can help the Ukraines so that they have a place to live so they can worry about the wood tones in their furniture if they ever have a home or furniture again. Pray for Ukraine..thx

  4. I can't stand that cheap, gray, wood look flooring, that people are installing now. It's ugly and just a fad/trend that WILL go out of style soon. I don't like everything painted gray to match either. (especially kitchen/bath cabinets – hideous) I say, stay away from fads when it comes to flooring and paint. Keep it clean, classy, and classic. You can play with fads through your curtains, pillows and decorations, that are easy (and much less expensive) to replace when they go out of style. You're welcome.
