How do I figure a hot or neutral wire if the wire has been painted?

Thank you for the video! Attempting to put a smart switch (Kasa) in a garage location and I'm faced with no neutral wire extending into the garage switch box. Kasa requires a neutral wire as I do not want to use a hub like is required with Lutron. After watching your video, I may just connect the red traveler to the neutral in the first switch box inside the house to the garage and convert it to a single pole switch. I also may just call an electrician if things get too complicated.
