Today I’m cooking 200-year-old Thanksgiving recipes from the First American Cookbook and early American history to see what they REALLY ate at the original Thanksgiving table. These vintage, old-fashioned dishes were inspired by Sarah Josepha Hale, the “Mother of Thanksgiving,” and they might surprise you!
Some of these historical recipes were delicious… and some were definitely not. 😅 Watch until the end to see which old-world dish is actually making it onto our family’s Thanksgiving table this year.
If you love old-fashioned recipes, vintage cooking, pioneer homemaking, early American food history, Thanksgiving recipes, or traditional heritage cooking, you’re going to love this one.

Indian Pudding
“Pompkin Pie”
from Amercan Cookery by Amelia Simmons
RECIPE for filling
1 Quart (1L) Whole Milk
2 Cups (450g) Pumpkin Puree
4 eggs
½ Cup (190g) Molasses
1 ½ teaspoons allspice
2 teaspoons ginger
1. Blind bake the pie crust until fully cooked.
2. Mix all of the ingredients together until smooth then add to cooled pie crust. Bake at 350°F / 175°C for 75 – 80 minutes or until there is just a slight wobble in the middle of the pie.
3. Turn off oven but leave the pie in to cool with the door slightly ajar (you can use a wooden spoon to prop it open).
4. Let cool completely before slicing. This actually tastes even better the next day!

P.s. your question about the s and f..it's a different for of s called a long s. It's was used in the beginning and middle of words. The modern s as we know it was used at the end of words in the olden days
❤❤❤
oh the pie looks good
Thank you so much! That was fun. You are so brave.
I grew up eating Indian pudding. In Massachusetts it was a staple in many households.
My kids loved it as much as I did growing up. I was taught to bake it in a dish that was set in a casserole dish with water in it to keep the oven from drying out the pudding. The recipe I have is very old too.
Such a fun video! I might try one of these this year.
One of my favorite episodes yet! Love the old check tags recipes…Thank you
😮m anxious to try the vinegar pie. I think my mom made one years ago. I have seen old samplers with the f in place of the s.
That was so lovely 🌷🥮 especially seeing the children enjoying your baked goods. Made it all worthwhile. Have a blessed week ❤
Sorry to be a critic but I could not see that your son was eating like he was starving. His face was practically in the plate. Don’t forget to teach manners in your class work. I know this will cause a bunch of negative responses but it was drilled in me to bring the food to my mouth not my month to the food.
