As a more lighthearted bit of trivia, the actual town of Hope is about 2 hours drive east of Vancouver, BC. It is a true time capsule town, remaining largely unchanged since principle photography took place. I remember it being quite a big deal at the time, particularly once the film was released.

I think it is important to also see this film from the Sheriff's perspective. So many people just mark him down as a villain, and that is it. And yes, he was ultimately in the wrong. But on the other hand, if a homeless drifter shows up in town, has no ties to anyone there, and has a giant knife hidden on him, that would kind of be a red flag for most law enforcement. And while the colonel's advice to let him go may seem reasonable, from the sheriff's perspective it means basically letting a dangerous killer run loose in the area in the hopes that he would get bored and leave. Again, no law enforcement in the country would go for that. Now, Galt WAS a sadistic villain. But remember that the sheriff told him to get in line multiple times; he didn't just let his buddy do whatever he wanted.
It is also important to remember the times. There were a lot of very negative stereotypes going around about Vietnam veterans. People called them "baby killers" and murderers. PTSD was also very poorly understood at the time, and so, as far as people knew, these veterans just went crazy for no reason sometimes.
Now, again, the way Rambo was treated was wrong. But the sheriff was really just the stand-in for the real problem; the way society treats veterans. Ultimately, the sheriff, a veteran himself, did not really act out of line. He was motivated by pride and emotion at times, but his focus the entire time was on making sure a dangerous killer was not presenting a danger to the town he was sworn to protect.
Agent Orange was a chemical they sprayed all over Viet Nam to get rid of the jungle so the guys could see the enemy. Unfortunately, it gave some soulders cancer . A struggle that continues to this day.
What a lot of people don’t pick up on, however Troutman did, is that Rambo didn’t have to walk back across the bridge. He could have kept traveling after the sheriff dropped him off. Instead he knew he would be starting something by going back. He wanted a fight to happen.
There were supposed to be stunt men to do these stunts. But , when they looked at the script they said, your crazy. So , SLY did them himself and that's how he began doing his own stunts in movies. Except for the fall into the tree, he did them all . Even the fall through the tree.

I never say this, except in the case of Rambo. Do not watch the sequels. Just stop here. Please. This is the only Rambo movie written by someone with a brain. They dumbed down the sequels, pumped him full of steroids, and turned him into a mouthpiece for nationalistic American pro-war propaganda.
He said " I'll give you a war you won't believe" . This is it.
