    Origin of the myth
    The myth originated with a 1930s study by entomologist Antoine Magnan and aeronautic engineer André Saint-Lagué, who used simple aerodynamic principles that applied to airplanes but not to the unique flight mechanics of bees.
    Their conclusion was that the bee's body was too heavy for its wing size to produce enough lift.
    This incorrect assumption persisted for years because scientists lacked the technology to observe the complex, high-speed movements of the wings.
    Later research, using high-speed cameras, finally revealed the actual mechanics of their flight.
